The Company

Plato was right: necessity is the mother of invention. Like many companies, Comprehencia was founded out of necessity by lifelong langugage learner and German physicist Dr. Marc Busch.
A lover and student of languages, Dr. Busch lived in Japan for a year. Using flashcards, he learned 2000 Kanji, Chinese characters used in the Japanese language. At the end of his year in Japan, 1000 of those cards were in the "last flashcard box," which meant, according to the Leitner method of language learning, they were supposedly burned into his long-term memory for life.

When Dr. Busch returned to Germany, life - in the form of marriage and a new company launch - intervened and brought his studies to a halt. A year later, he returned to his studies only to find that the flashcards were still sorted in a way that reflected his proficiecy a year ago - when he stopped. They certainly didn't reflect how his proficiency had changed in his head. Dr. Busch knew that, if we wanted to start studying again, he would have to start from scratch - putting all 2000 cards back into the first box and working through them again.

"No thanks," he thought. And he cancelled his study plan.

Dr. Busch pledged at that time that he would never again study vocabulary without the aid of a dynamic system that would take into account his mental imperfections and tendency to forget - a system that would actively support his learning endeavor over a lifetime, even through long periods of no studying at all.

Being a lover of language by nature but a scientist by trade, Dr. Busch realized that this was a problem others surely faced in their efforts to learn a language over time - a problem that, in his scientific mind, called for a solution.

Against this backdrop, Comprehencia was born.

Unlike in the Leitner method, Comprehencia considers the unique learning history of each flashcard - whether you learned the information on it quickly or slowly - or not yet at all. Also unlike Leitner, Comprehencia supports language learning over the course of a lifetime. This type of learning support cannot be realized with a traditional flashcard box. It requires computing power and algorithmic intelligence. Comprehencia enables learners worldwide to use this learning system. That's the way to learn in the 21st century.

Comprehencia is language learning for the 21st century - and beyond.
